The city of Skopje's beginnings are noticeable since the Roman empire when its name was Skupi and it was located on the left side of river Vardar. The next few centuries Skopje was continuously conquered and liberated and emperor was changing as: Byzantine Empire, Serbian and Bulgarian. The city was suffering defeats, rising again and suffering natural catastrophes. Skopje was not the main market city, but with its geographic location, for a long time it was main place where all of the Balkan roads were passing through.
